It’s here! Part one of my list of binge-worthy shows. Yes, I say part one because I realized how daunting a task it was to write about all of my favorite shows. So I selected a few that are so great I knew exactly what to say!
While this is primarily Netflix, I had one favorite for which I strayed. This non-Netflix wonder is labeled, so skip on over it if you’re loyal to the ole’ Netflix.
I, for one, hold no loyalty during these times. I need as many fake TV friends as possible.
For your skimming pleasure, these are broken down by category. So choose your own adventure: find the category that is calling your name or read through it all because what the hell else do you have to do (I’m not wrong).
Laugh Out Loud Hilarious.
Like actually hilarious, not just the “funny” where you half-smile and then grunt, but never actually laugh.
I’m Sorry
Guess what? I’m NOT Sorry for this recommendation. And you won’t be either. This is, hands down, the funniest show I’ve watched since Parks and Rec (which is the funniest show there is so…). The show follows Andrea Warren, a dirty comedy writer, as she raises her preschool daughter. They have a lot of awkward moments and it certainly lives up to its name. Those who don’t like raunchy, beware. But if you have few boundaries and little makes you uncomfortable, then this is the LOL show for you.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - Amazon Prime
It took multiple people telling me directly that I needed to watch this show before I finally caved, and I'm glad I did. This show is hilarious! While most people are laughing at the main character - the comedian, Mrs. Maisel - I’m in it for her father, Abe. He is the “what is so funny?” type of funny. And it kills me! The same disclaimer applies here. This show’s a bit raunchy, so watch at your own risk.
True Crime Dramatizations
Everyone has their creepy thing, and mine is how into true crime I am. Like I’m probably too into it. But I just can’t stop...and it won't stop either (dark, I know).
Dirty John
This show really creeped me out. But it’s based on a true story, so I read how it really ended and then continued being creeped out, but with a sense of peace. If you’re into psychological relationship thrillers, I recommend this one. If you’re not, just Google the true story and move along.
Unbelievable
This is the kind of show that gives you hope and makes you feel terrible all at the same time. And it’s based on a true story. I’m sure I really sold it with that description. It’s about a string of sexual assaults and the juxtaposition of how two different precincts handled similar cases. Truthfully, it’s a really interesting story and I love the badass lady power surrounding the awesome detectives in this show.
Teenage Girl Shows
If you’re not a teenage girl...then read on to find your next embarrassing guilty pleasure. No judgement here.
Alexa & Katie
This show is about two high school best friends taking on the world. But they’re also fighting another battle - cancer. It’s a sweet show about the power of friendship and overcoming the ups-and-downs of high school.
The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia
Ashley Garcia is a super genius who’s starting her dream job...and trying to learn how to be a normal teenager. It’s silly, easy to watch and lighthearted. It’s a very quick watch, so if you need to sit down and hammer out a whole series in a day, you can do it. Also, I support you in that endeavor, always.
Heartwarming
These next few are so heartwarming, you won’t need your blanky or your fuzzy socks or your fireplace to warm you. You can just marinate in your heart-warminess.
The Healing Powers of Dude
This show is about a boy with social anxiety who is about to begin middle school. He needs a little help, so he gets an emotional support dog named Dude. Much of the show is from Dude’s perspective, which is an interesting twist. Either way, it's super heartwarming. I don’t even have any jokes, which is super rare. I even had all the jokes at my own wedding.
Fuller House
I can’t say it’s good. In fact, I can say it’s not good. But it’s cute and nostalgic. The show follows DJ, who is now an adult raising her own kids. The acting is pretty terrible. The shenanigans are pretty dumb. And I’m pretty here for it.
Thrillers / Crime
If you want to be thrilled, and not in the amusement park kind of way, check these out!
The Sinner
This show keeps you on the edge of your seat. You might even stay up all night to finish, but don’t blame me if you oversleep.
Anyway, this show is about some super obscure crimes and they flash back and flash forward. If you are bad at multiple timelines, or can’t tell when people have aged or de-aged (I wanted to say shrunk but that makes no sense), then you’re going to be kind of confused.
The good news is, I’m really bad at all of the above and I still knew what was happening most of the time. It’s worth it if you like watching the crimes!
The Killing
This show is all about killings, surprise. While the title is not surprising, the show is! Another show that I just wanted to finish so I could know what happened. And when I finished I was craving more!
Each season is about a different crime. I feel like that’s the perfect setup. You don’t need to learn a new plot every episode and you don’t need to remember how a crime left off for months while the next season is in the works. You hang on for 12ish episodes (I have no idea I made this number up because it felt right), which could potentially be one single day if you’re feeling like a super lazy blob, and then you move right along.
Classic Comedy Shows
These are the classics! I hope for your sake that you have already seen these shows, but for the poor souls who have not, I'm including them here. Don’t brush them off. Don’t say you “tried but just couldn’t get into it.” You literally can’t get into anywhere right now, so you might as well get into these shows.
Parks and Recreation
If you haven’t watched Parks and Rec, hop back to my last blog and read about how some things you’re too old to have not done already. This is one of those things, because it’s objectively the best show ever. Okay, that’s not objective. That is completely subjective. But in my blog, I am the authority on objective and I don’t have to recognize my own bias!
Parks and Rec is about the lovable Leslie Knope and her life as an employee of the Pawnee, Indiana Parks department. Follow Leslie and her rag-tag gang of coworkers as they take on the raccoons (I just learned how to spell raccoons. I'm shocked it has two c's), the library and much more. Parks and Rec is simply a classic! It will make you laugh out loud and it will make you happy. As a teaser, check out my favorite video about relating to Leslie Knope.
Also, Ron Swanson is the best character. See the GIF above. That is all.
Arrested Development
I hate to be this person, but this show is great if you can get past season one. I mean really, really great. Like watch it 4 times and still feel like you need to watch it again great. Like make Arrested Development jokes with your friends every time you see them great. But it’s not for everyone. If you don’t have a dry sense of humor and lots of time to wait for the punchline, move along.
New Girl
New Girl is really weird, y’all, which I think is why I like it. It’s just goofy and silly and the kind of show that makes you feel better about how strange you are (or is that just me?). It’s a quick and easy watch so sit back and enjoy.
Unpopular opinion, but my favorite character is Winston. He’s so odd in the best way. I like him so much, I one day plan to name an animal after him. And I don’t just mean I think Winston is a good dog name. Like, he will truly be New Girl Winston’s legacy.
Man, I’ve started to sense a theme in my recommendations. My favorite character is never the main character and always the weirdest character. This seems fitting, I just never put it together until I wrote about all of my favorite shows at one time.
That's All For Now, Folks!
Thanks for Quaran-Tuning In! (S/O to my coworker Kara for this solid pun that I borrowed without asking for permission. Hope you don’t mind!)
Well, my faraway friends, there you have it! I hope you find at least one good recommendation - or that you pass this along to someone who watches less Netflix than you!
One day, I will release another part to this list.
One day, we will see the inside of some place besides our homes and our grocery stores.
One day too, too far away.
But until then, we press on.
Be on the lookout for a Drinking with Lisa post. I have no idea what we’ll talk about, but it’ll DEFINITELY involve alcohol. I’m already planning on pouring a tall glass of tequila, so choose something strong enough to get on my level.
Cheers,
QL
